A mix of tarmac, gravel,dirt and a bit of mud for good measure. Be aware it's a designated National Cycle route NC55 but it's shared with a lot of dog walkers who give looks of disdain at you for actually using a bicycle on a designated cycle path. There can be a few horses too but generally it's a great path.
